Dedicated drama venue seeks to promote reformed theatre

Dedicated drama venue seeks to promote reformed theatre A new theatre dedicated to cai luong (reformed theatre) performances has opened in HCM City's District 1. The Kim Chau Theatre, previously owned by the Hong Van Drama Theatre, has been transferred to the Mekong Artists Company.

Cai luong artist Linh Huyen, director of Mekong Artists, said, "A cai luong theatre has been my wish for a long time."

The theatre would help her to develop the art of cai luong although she knows that she and her staff would meet a lot of difficulties on the way, she said.

The theatre opened last Thursday with a special play for children – Tieu Anh Hung Nam Quoc (Vietnamese Young Hero), featuring hero Tran Quoc Toan of the Tran dynasty.

Written and directed by Bach Long, the play will be staged every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In the coming weeks, the theatre will present Mot Ong, Hai Baø (One Man, Two Women) written by Linh Huyen and directed by Cat Phuong.

Ba Chua Tho Nom (the Queen of Nom Poetry), which was staged at the HCM City Opera House last year, will be another play that the theatre will present to audiences soon. The play is written by Linh Huyen and directed by Tran Minh Ngoc.

Well-known artists like Ngoc Giau, Tan Beo, and Bao Tri take part in the plays, as well young artists like Vo Minh Chung, Le Hong Tham and Thy Nhung who learnt cai luong at Mekong Artists.

"The enthusiasm of both experienced and young artists for cai luong is my motivation to develop the theatre," Huyen said.

The theatre is located at 115-117 Nguyen Thai Binh Street, HCM City.
